Coming back to Sanctuary after months away can feel like learning the endgame again. The boss ladder now works around Lair Bosses, Hoards, and keys, so the first thing to understand is simple: you can enter the fight without handing over your valuable materials. That gives you time to check your build, learn the encounter, and decide whether the reward is worth opening, while keeping your D4 items and resources organised for later runs.
Fight First, Open the Hoard Later
A Lair Boss no longer demands its related materials at the entrance. You can take on the battle, see how your damage and defence hold up, and deal with the result before using anything. When the boss falls, a Hoard appears in the arena. The reward is waiting inside, but you need the correct Lair Boss Keys to unlock it. In a group, every player should bring their own keys. Joining a friend's run does not automatically provide access to the Hoard.
Know Which Bosses Belong to Each Tier
The ladder is split into Initiate, Greater, and Exalted encounters. Initiate bosses include Beast in the Ice, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Varshan, and Urivar. Greater targets include Duriel, Andariel, and Harbinger of Hatred. Belial, Lord of Lies, sits in the Exalted tier. The key costs differ between these groups, and the higher tiers generally offer stronger rewards with fewer keys required per Hoard.
Initiate bosses are a practical starting point for rebuilding your materials.
Stygian Stones from these fights can be exchanged for a Greater Boss Key of your choice.
Greater and Exalted fights are better saved for focused farming sessions.
Build Resources Through Normal Endgame Play
You can collect boss-related materials while running Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Blood Maiden events, Legion Events, and World Bosses. Each boss uses a different resource. Malignant Hearts point toward Varshan, while Living Steel is linked with Grigoire, and other encounters follow their own material rules. Check the Lair details before spending anything. War Plans can also help organise your routine by linking activities such as Helltides, the Pit, Infernal Hordes, Kurast Undercity, and Lair Bosses into a route that matches your goals. Shared reputation can carry across eligible characters, although each character keeps a separate planner.
A Practical Routine for Returning Players
Start with activities that supply the materials you need, then choose an Initiate boss that suits your current build. Enter the fight without worrying about an entrance payment. If the encounter goes well, use the required keys on the Hoard and keep the rewards that improve your character. Stygian Stones give you a clearer route toward Duriel or Andariel instead of leaving every upgrade to chance. Once your build feels reliable, set aside your d4 mats for sale for planned Greater runs, and use War Plans to keep each farming session focused.
